Cabinet painting vs. replacing: what actually makes sense

A full kitchen remodel is not the only route to a kitchen you like. Here is when painting your cabinets is the smarter call — and when it is not.

Start with the boxes, not the doors

The question is not how the cabinets look — it is how they are built. If the boxes are solid, the hinges sound and the layout works for you, painting gets you a dramatically different kitchen for a fraction of a replacement. Doors and hardware can be swapped separately if you want a new style.

When painting is the wrong answer

If the boxes are water damaged, sagging or falling apart at the joints, paint will not fix that. Neither will it change a layout that does not work. We will tell you honestly when a repaint is not the right spend.

Why the finish matters so much
